Expanded National Literacy Programme

We are advancing a national literacy initiative to ensure every child develops strong foundational reading skills. Through evidence-based programmes—Lindamood-Bell® Seeing Stars®, Snappy Sounds®, and Jolly Phonics®—students benefit from structured, systematic phonics instruction proven to improve reading outcomes. In the 2024–2025 school year, more than 5,000 students across 67 primary, 12 secondary, and 3 special schools received instruction, supported by 311 trained teachers.

Phase II will expand coverage to nursery, primary, special, and secondary schools, providing additional resources, professional development, and embedded classroom support. Desired outcomes include measurable improvement in reading fluency and comprehension, greater student engagement through interactive and multisensory learning, and empowered teachers equipped with effective tools for literacy instruction. Long-term, the initiative aims to raise national academic performance, reduce learning gaps, and create a sustainable culture of literacy excellence—ensuring every Barbadian child can thrive and succeed in school and beyond.
